Addiction Rehabilitation Center

There is a drug crisis in Northern India

The economy of in the Diocese of Bijnor primarily revolves around agriculture and manufacturing. The vast majority of households are considered to be low income and are often marginalized. Unfortunately, the incidence of drug addiction is shockingly high, with the impact to the addict’s family being substantial. Alcohol, heroin, opioids, cocaine, and prescription medications are familiar intoxicants to individuals within the Diocese. Stigma pertaining to the addiction causes family shame, social withdrawal, and isolation due to its physical and mental impact. It is not uncommon for young women related to addicts to be unable to get married, to have young mothers widowed, and small children orphaned due to the disease.

The goal of the state-of-the-art Addiction Rehabilitation Center is to not only support recovery for the addict, but to promote measures for the mitigation and prevention of alcohol and drug use in the young and old alike.

As the Executive Director for the Addiction Rehabilitation Center, Father Sibi Poulose, was called to take action in 2015. In July of that year at 8 AM in the morning, he heard an announcement through the loudspeaker about the death of a 29-year-old man that had overdosed. While visiting his family, he received news that on a weekly basis there were suicides, homicides and accidents that were all related to illegal alcohol and substance abuse. He could see the despair and sadness of the families and he decided that he wanted to be part of mission to bring forth hope and an opportunity to heal. We believe that if one person is saved from disaster, all those who are associated with that individual will get relief too.
